Redefining Success for Gen Z's

How can we define success? Is success different from the perspective of Gen Z’s? Or millennial people? It’s not easy to be exposed on social media at a very young age, be a content creator, and be nitpicked by netizens for all the things you’ve been putting out there. But as we thrive being adults, we learn how to navigate through these struggles.

What is the definition of success?

The definition of success can vary greatly depending on individual perspectives, cultural influences, and personal goals. Generally, success refers to the achievement of a desired outcome, accomplishment of goals, or attainment of a level of achievement that is considered meaningful or satisfactory.

Success can be measured in different ways, including:

1) Personal Fulfillment.

Feeling content, happy, and fulfilled in various aspects of life, such as relationships, career, hobbies, and personal growth.

2) Recognition and Reputation.

Gaining acknowledgment, respect, and admiration from peers, colleagues, and society for your accomplishments.

3) Personal Growth and Learning.

Continuously developing your skills, knowledge, and abilities to evolve as an individual and expand your horizons.

4) Impact and Contribution.

Making a positive difference in the lives of others, your community, or even on a global scale, through your actions, work, or contributions.

5) Work-Life Balance.

Successfully managing both your professional and personal responsibilities in a way that allows you to maintain a healthy balance and avoid burnout.

The definition of success is deeply personal and can evolve over time. What may be considered successful for one person might not be the same for another. It's essential to define success based on your own values, aspirations, and circumstances, rather than solely relying on external expectations or societal norms.

Success is being happy with what you do and knowing what your foundation is.

How is success different from Gen Z vs a Millennial?

1) Digital Native vs. Digital Adaptation

Gen Z: Gen Z individuals are true digital natives, having grown up with technology and the internet from a very young age. Their perspective on success may involve leveraging digital platforms, online entrepreneurship, and building a strong social media presence.

Millennials: While Millennials also adapted to the rise of technology, they experienced a transition from analog to digital. Their definition of success might encompass navigating this digital shift, as well as using technology for personal and professional growth.

2) Career Aspirations

Gen Z: This generation tends to prioritize finding meaningful work that aligns with their values and allows for creative expression. They may value flexibility, entrepreneurship, and the ability to make a positive impact through their careers.

Millennials: Millennials often focused on climbing the corporate ladder and achieving stability in their careers. They may have a stronger attachment to traditional job structures but also value work-life balance and purpose-driven work.

3) Financial Outlook

Gen Z: Growing up during economic challenges, Gen Z might prioritize financial stability, financial literacy, and practical financial decisions. They may aim to achieve financial independence and manage debt more carefully.

Millennials: Many Millennials faced financial struggles due to economic downturns. They might place emphasis on overcoming financial hurdles, managing student loan debt, and building wealth over time

4) Social and Environmental Concerns

Gen Z: Gen Z has a heightened awareness of social and environmental issues. Success for them might involve contributing to causes, participating in activism, and promoting sustainability through their actions and choices.

Millennials: While also socially conscious, Millennials might have approached activism and social issues differently, possibly valuing community involvement and advocating for change through established channels.

5) Work-Life Balance

Gen Z: Gen Z values work-life balance and flexibility in their careers. Success might mean being able to pursue hobbies, travel, and personal interests while maintaining a fulfilling work life.

Millennials: Millennials also prioritize work-life balance, but they may have faced challenges in achieving it due to changing workplace dynamics and economic pressures.

These are general trends and individual perspectives can vary widely within each generation. Both Gen Z and Millennials have their own unique strengths, challenges, and aspirations that shape their definitions of success.

We need to start with the honesty of who we are.
