Unpacking Gen Z’s Woke Culture and Cancel Culture

Why is the woke culture prevalent now with Gen Z’s? What is its correlation with cancel culture? Join me and Pastor Marty Ocaya for a candid conversation about the complexities of woke culture and cancel culture. From the benefits of holding individuals and institutions accountable to the potential consequences of cancel culture, we tackle the nuances of these cultural phenomena and what they mean for our society.

Why do a lot of young people now subscribe to the woke ideology?

1) Social Justice Awareness

The "woke" ideology often centers around social justice issues such as racial equality, gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmental justice. Many young people are passionate about creating a more equitable and inclusive society and are drawn to ideologies that advocate for these causes.

2) Information Accessibility

With the rise of social media and the internet, information about social justice issues has become more accessible than ever before. Young people have greater access to diverse perspectives, news, and activism efforts, which can shape their worldview and values.

3) Cultural Shifts

There has been a cultural shift towards prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion in various sectors, including education, media, and corporate environments. Young people are influenced by these cultural shifts and are more likely to embrace ideologies that align with progressive values.

4) Peer Influence

Social circles and peer groups play a significant role in shaping beliefs and behaviors. Young people may adopt the "woke" ideology as a way to fit in with their peer group or align themselves with like-minded individuals who share their values and beliefs.

5) Critique of Traditional Institutions

There is often skepticism and disillusionment among young people towards traditional institutions and authorities. The "woke" ideology provides a framework for critiquing and challenging established power structures and systems of oppression.

Why is it important to connect with the woke generation?

It's important to connect with the "woke" generation because it aligns with the teachings of Jesus Christ to advocate for justice, compassion, and love for all people. Engaging with the new generation provides opportunities to build relationships, share the Gospel message, and demonstrate how Christian faith intersects with social justice issues. By connecting with individuals who are passionate about addressing systemic oppression and inequality, we can learn, grow, and deepen their understanding of social justice issues while also being agents of change and reconciliation in the world.

Ultimately, connecting with the "woke" generation reflects the call of Christianity to love God and love our neighbors, work towards justice, and be a positive force for transformation and healing in society.

How do we reach out to the woke generation?

1) Listen Actively

Take the time to actively listen to the perspectives, experiences, and concerns of individuals in the "woke" generation without judgment or defensiveness. Show empathy and compassion as you seek to understand their perspectives and the issues that matter to them.

2) Build Authentic Relationships

Foster authentic relationships based on mutual respect, trust, and understanding. Be willing to engage in open, honest dialogue and share your own perspectives and experiences in a respectful and non-confrontational manner.

3) Show Christ-like Love

Demonstrate Christ-like love and compassion in your interactions with others, regardless of differences in beliefs or opinions. Let your actions and words reflect the love, grace, and acceptance that Jesus showed to all people.

What is your encouragement to Gen Z’s who feel outcast because of their faith?

Stay strong in your faith, even if you feel alone. Seek supportive communities, be bold in your beliefs, and find strength in prayer and Scripture. Remember your worth in Christ, be patient, and persevere through doubts and struggles. You are valued, accepted, and never alone in your journey.

A lot of times we see love as just “acceptance”, but love is also reprimanding others for their mistakes with empathy and understanding.
