What We Get Wrong (And Right) About Love, Marriage, & Self-Love
Let’s have a meaningful conversation about love—what we often get wrong and what we can get right. We’re joined by our friend from yesHEis, Binky Tan, to unpack the true meaning of love, marriage, and self-love.
Different kinds of love
1) Unconditional love
This kind of love is not something we can achieve on our own; it flows from our relationship with Jesus. Without Him, we cannot truly love in the way God calls us to. Love connects us not only to one another but also to the heart of God, drawing us closer to Him and reflecting His divine nature in our lives.
2)Love in Friendships
It’s not about romance, but about deep connection, trust, and mutual care. It’s the kind of love that shows up in late-night talks, inside jokes, and being there for each other through life’s highs and lows.
3) Love in Marriage
In marriage, the Bible teaches the importance of discipleship and submission. Being discipled means learning to listen, trust, and accept guidance, believing that God uses others to speak truth in love.Through discipleship, one learns humility and obedience, which are essential in building a strong, God-centered marriage.
4) Self-love
Saint Augustine once said, “Our hearts are restless until it finds its rest in you,” and this truly speaks to the deeper struggle behind selfish self-love. It often stems from a longing for purpose, meaning, and affirmation in the world. We try to fill that emptiness by seeking validation from external sources, but our hearts remain restless. (JP)
Why is it important to show love to others
1) Fulfilling the greatest commandment
Jesus taught that the greatest commandment is to love God and love others mentioned in the book of Matthew 22:37-39. By showing love, we obey His will and bring glory to Him.
2) Reflects God’s character
God is love (1 John 4:8). When we love others, we reflect His nature and become His representatives in the world. His love inspires obedience and a desire to live for Him.
3) Strengthens relationships
Demonstrating God’s love fosters unity, understanding, and forgiveness in our families, friendships, and communities. At the end of the day, it’s about obeying Him, knowing that He loves us and wants what’s best - the key to a strong and lasting marriage.
4) Brings peace and joy
Experiencing Jesus' love changes everything—He becomes your reason to be your best, do good, and love others, because He loved you first.
It's a good reminder, because I feel like a lot of us especially those who are walking with the Lord also, we always ask that question, bakit ma struggle pa rin, bakit may trials pa din, bakit mahirap pa rin, that's true you know, that would continuously happen on the side of glory but I love the phrase “I would just get to know the One who holds all my tomorrows,” you may not know what tomorrow brings but I know the One who holds my tomorrow and that gives me so much hope (JP).
“The only way we can truly be hopeful, peaceful, purposeful, and loving is if we know the One who holds all things, knows all things, created all things, who loves us the most, and holds that tomorrow that we are desperately anxious for.”
