Creating A Life You Love

Aurora Suarez is a career and life coach who believes in the power of clarity, curiosity, connection, and courageous action in crafting a life you love. She is also a writer, author of The Sunday Night Journal and founder of Write Away, an all-women annual writing retreat that aim to spark inspiration. On this episode, we talk about how you can start working on habits that can change your life.

Discomfort & Possibilities

After working for 16 years in the publishing industry, Aurora took a leap of faith and left her job. Feeling satisfied with what she had done in her career, she decided to see what else is out there — what other possibilities the world had to offer. She says, “What happens is we sometimes have an inner voice, an inner call saying “there has to be more” and maybe you just have to jump into the unknown. Listen to what’s calling you. On the contrary, that’s incredibly uncomfortable! And for some people, it’s better to just head back to their comfort zones — but beyond discomfort is a place of possibility. In fact, once you get past the discomfort, where you end up is actually even better than what you had imagined.”

Choosing Your “WHY” Over Your COMFORT

It’s never easy to go beyond our comfort zones, and Aurora says - “I also have that point where I u-turned before really committing to pursue the path of being a coach. And I think the first thing you have to do is notice, acknowledge, and honor those discomforts. Yes, it’s uncomfortable because it’s new but there’s really discomfort in newness. Second is make a commitment. Make a commitment not just for yourself, but for your future self as well. Make a commitment to the vision you have for your life. And if you actually stay on the path, it might not go where you think it might and in fact you might even fail; but where you end up, you will either learn or grow or you will be in an even better place. When you feel yourself faltering and want to go back again in your comfort zone, seek the support of the people who believe in you and who can remind you why you’re taking that path. And the most important piece is know your ‘why’ because that ‘why’ will propel you to keep going.

For you to continuously grow and thrive, you always have to think of “What can I do next?” that will not only bring me out of my comfort zone but also challenge me to be better. We constantly get stuck in a rut because we stay in one place and we become too comfortable.

Starting A New Path

After being helped by a counselor during a season of personal distress, Aurora developed a passion for coaching and helping others. “Helping people and helping women to be better and to become what they’re meant to be [fuelled me]. I took a 10-month coaching program, a bigger leap — saying yes to being a coach full-time.” As with most things in life, there is a transition period in forging a new path. We have to learn to accept that we can’t immediately settle into our new jobs, or life choices. It’s a day-by-day process of moving forward and growing.

Creating A Life You Love

Try journaling. Journaling gives you a space to express your emotions and writing things down will help you reach a level of clarity.

Attitude of gratitude. Instead of focusing on seeing what’s wrong in our lives, we should divert our attention instead on what’s actually working and going right.

Understanding your ‘why’. Dig deep into our ‘why’. Why do we do what we do? What drives our everyday choices?

Take responsibility. We have to take responsibility for our lives and the choices that we make. This is very empowering, knowing that we can choose to do the right things.

Disposition changes everything, and to be able to create a life we love - we must be ready to face challenges, forge new paths, and stick to our “why”, when the going gets tough.
