Best Ways to Respond to Awkward Comments During Holidays

Are you always faced by your Titos and Titas with comments like “Uy, tumaba ka!” or “Uy, wala ka pa ding girlfriend/boyfriend?” These phrases are really hard to answer without feeling awkward! How can we handle these kinds of situations without being disrespectful?

Where to start?

1) Use a Light-hearted Deflection.

Playfully deflect the comment by responding with a light-hearted remark or a playful joke that diffuses tension and lightens the mood.

2) Change the Topic.

Shift the focus of the conversation by smoothly transitioning to a different, more neutral subject. Introduce a new topic or ask a question related to the holiday or a shared interest.

3) Acknowledge and Redirect.

Acknowledge the comment briefly, then steer the conversation in a different direction. For example, say, "That's an interesting perspective. By the way, have you tried the dessert? It's delicious!

The best way to go into an awkward conversation is to keep asking questions.

And then consider to:

1) Express Empathy.

Respond with empathy and understanding, especially if the comment is directed at someone else. Show support and compassion towards the person affected and redirect the conversation to a more positive topic.

2) Respond with a Polite Question.

Politely ask a question that redirects the conversation, such as, "That's an interesting point. What are your thoughts on [different topic]?"

3) Set Boundaries.

If the comment is inappropriate or makes you uncomfortable, calmly and assertively establish your boundaries by saying, "I prefer not to discuss that topic. Let's talk about something else, shall we?"

4) Deflect with a Compliment.

Respond to an awkward comment by offering a genuine compliment. This can help shift the focus and create a more positive atmosphere.

5) Disengage and

Move On.

Sometimes, the best response is to disengage from the conversation altogether. Excuse yourself politely and join another conversation or engage in a different activity.

Remember, the goal is to maintain a positive and enjoyable atmosphere during holiday gatherings. Choose responses that align with your values and help create a harmonious environment for everyone involved.

Be merry, be bright, and be light!
