The Power of Abundance Mentality

We sit down with Ron Baetiong, serial creative entrepreneur and founder of several start-up business including Podcast Network Asia, on how his abundance mentality has paved the way for his dreams to be fulfilled - and how he's paying it forward through podcasting.

Starting His Own Business

A lot of people have been going through so many different things specially during this pandemic. Glen Ron is the CEO and founder of Podcast Network Asia and the host of the number one business podcast in the Philippines, Hustleshare. He started his career very young because of his family’s incapacity for good education and meeting needs. And this difficulty hasn’t stop him for chasing opportunities. Choosing the path of Entrepreneurship, he then put up two startups. His first started, called Party File, flourished and grew that became the biggest nightlife app in Asia but then eventually failed. He had lost everything on that crash but still tried to discover new things and make ends meet again. And after a year of trying, he put up ChatBot Ph. On this hardship, he then learned and start asking himself on how he will be able to pay forward and help those start-up founders that are struggling.

How to stand up after a hard crash?

I didn't have the answer, actually. But a friend helped me during the pages. I actually called it startup purgatory, wherein you're not in control anymore, and you're just waiting for someone to pray for you to save their soul because I already ran out of moves. I don’t have the money, the theme and also the clients. But then, I pick up myself and wrote down all the lessons I learned from all of these and published it as an article with I called “Lessons From Startup Purgatory:13 Lessons I Learned from a Failed Startup.” Then eventually, it went viral and someone picked it up. I guess an unselfish kind of mindset really changes everything. For all the entrepreneurs out there, the main thing that we constantly have to deal with is failure.

There’s nothing really wrong in seeking help and doing therapy as long as this will be helpful for our well-being. It’s good to look around towards the people we trust and really ask for help. We should break the stigma of mental health and just start that conversation right now without the fear of being judged or telling somebody that we’re feeling anxious or stressed because we don't want to burden them. Find a community and really start to connect with people. Have that human connection. Take advantage also with the technology to have chats with people. (JP)

How to garner the bravery to start again?

In Kickstarter, they asked us to make a mood board of our dreams. People will call it corny but I found it so fascinating which I put on my wall to remind me every morning of my purpose. What I found out through this whole journey is that doubt is the killer of all. This life is not a competition. In terms of mindset, always try to apply the blue ocean strategy. Do something that not a lot of people are doing. Look for problems that are nobody or very only a very few people are doing. And I feel like one idea that a lot of entrepreneurs really need to have is to look at the current market that you have, and not see everyone as a competition, but kind of create your own little ocean where you can thrive. (RB)

The Abundance Mentality

Having these mood boards for Ron while growing up changes his path. It’s the psychology of always reminding ourselves of the things we should be doing, we should keep doing and still thrive even if we don’t feel it.

What are the skill sets to succeed in entrepreneurship?

Ron started from scratch. And for him, selling for clients means selling also the vision. Equip yourself with the right skill. Remember that you’re working to learn and not just to have the money. Invest in yourself first. Join communities where you can learn and grow the skill sets that you need. (RB)

Also, the one thing I can advise for those young adulting people who work for a small company is to ask who your boss would be. Because in my case, my boss is my first mentor. Your boss will shape you where you’re going to be and if you’re following the wrong boss, there’s going to be a lot of bad habits that might be passed down to you as well. I’ve also used the Lean Startup Methodology which I learned how to create my own business model canvas in just a sheet of paper. (RB)

You can learn and gain everything that you have when you travel and meet other people.

Digital is really a huge part also this time. It's really not just a goldmine as most entrepreneurs and business people would call it but more of a huge opportunity to really make the world a smaller and more substantial place.

The Podcast Industry in the Philippines

Just like Hustleshare, Ron started his new empire with the same intention, to pay it forward to the startup community. He saw that no one else is exploring yet in the podcasting industry. Seeing that less than 20% was only populating the new industry, he created a company that would help podcasters in the Philippines start their own podcast, produce and monetize it.

And right now, the podcasting industry and the Philippine market has been growing ever since. Podcasting is a different topic when it comes to YouTube video. The one mistake that most people know is that its content can be identical but little they know that the intent of the audience of the podcast is different. It’s not to be entertained like YouTube, but to learn. So for podcast, content creators should make sure that it adds value to the intellect of their listeners.

This is not just content is king, its audience and content. They’re the kings and the Queens, it can’t just be one way.

Can podcasting be for everyone?

Because of the wide range of user-friendly apps or websites such as Spotify which you could easily see the analytics of your materials and Anchor that could help you publish your episodes to a vast range of podcast platforms, starting your own show would never been this easy unlike when it was the golden age of podcast. But first of all, you need to have a good audio, something that could be conducive to learning because as we mentioned it, the main intention of your listener is to be educated.

And one thing that our community, Adulting With Joyce Pring, really always talk about is that whatever our why is, it should be rooted in something that’s bigger than ourselves. What is your main reason why you want to start this show? What are the things that you could talk about that will not just be helpful for you, but for other as well? You have to connect with your audience too. (JP)

Tips for the aspiring podcasters

Practice first, before you even release that thing, you have to be comfortable behind the mic. You need to learn how to modulate your voice and to sound good. Learn to enunciate proper diction.

Have a solid concept. Be original and apply the Blue Ocean Strategy in podcasting. Talk about something that nobody else is talking about.

Don't think about the big numbers first. Aim for substantial and important numbers. It’s fine to start small but remember that you always have a room for growth and you will not stay the same way that you started. Build those numbers and make it grow soon.

Adapting in this world full of failures and success is hard but one thing in mind is that we should be compassionate and kind to each other and to ourselves also. If we have the chance to be kind and right, we have to be selfless about it and resonate it to whatever medium we could touch on.
