The Big "D" (Depression!)

“THE BIG ‘D’ (DEPRESSION!)” EP. 36 SHOWNOTES FROM THE PODCAST:

“Everytime, I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder and my feet dragged with so much sadness. It’s really tough and worst.”

Joyce describes it as the most paradoxical contrast in her life as she struggles with another season of depression. Unaware of this, everytime she experience it, she just brush it off thinking that it’s just an effect of her being artistic. And on this episode, she shares to us the six ways how she was able to deal with depression especially on its heightened season.

1) Identify, Acknowledge and Express

○ Identify. Are you just being sad? If it lasted for a couple of days and there are no triggers, maybe it’s another season of depression. Start looking for signs that you are going through it again.

○ Acknowledge. We suffer because we keep denying that we have it. Start accepting that everyone can be hit by anxiety and depression.

○ Express. Start finding ways on how to process the emotion and mental state you have. Like, writing down on your journal.

2) Stay away from social media

Being in social media, for sure, will absolutely put you in a place that makes you compare yourself with other people. So take a break from it and breathe!

3) Take care of your body better

We’re always gonna be busy. It’s okay to hustle it out but if you’re depressed, one of the things you can do as a favor to your mental health is to get some rest. Get some sleep. Get some exercise. Get some good food. Changing your nutrition and your activities will calibrate your brain and body. Also, stay away from alcoholic beverage, which are natural downers, or anything that will make my heart pump faster.

4)

Balance alone time with time with other people

Make sure that your alone time is a healthy one, something that will help you be better. After your alone time, see people and interact with people especially those who know you well. It’s not safe for people with depression to be alone, especially in the height of depression. An idle mind is the devil’s playground.

5) Focus on helping and loving others

Start to refocus and shift your energy to more important things like thinking about others and how you can help them and the community to be better. Doing that while on your depression, it will help you understand the things that matter in life and makes you be grateful in what you have. It gives a wider perspective of the world around you and makes you more compassionate.

6) Pray and meditate on God’s Word

Look for Christ and seek after Him, and you’ll find life. Knowing that there’s eternal hope in God, then you will always have to cling on to. The ultimate comfort really is in Christ Jesus and the eternal life he offers us as a gift.

Verses to meditate on :)

○ 1 Peter 5:6-7

○ John 16:33

○ Romans 8:38-39

○ 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Pay it forward and help those who are dealing with the same things. It might be a bad day or a bad season, but it’s not a bad life. And there’s always hope. May we always keep on moving forward!
